David Lightfoot

David's practice as a commercial artist and illustrator spans four decades and multiple technological shifts in the field. His earliest creative ambition formed while reading picture books on the floor of his childhood home: he wanted to draw pictures. Marvel and DC comics followed, then the work of Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker—masters who solidified his commitment to illustration as a livelihood.

He began taking life drawing classes in high school and, after working various jobs unrelated to art, eventually became Art Director at an advertising agency during the pre-digital era when drawing remained essential to communicating ideas to clients. For many years he worked as both an art director and freelance designer and illustrator, with his work appearing in Mother Jones, The Science Fiction Book Club, and other publications.

As computers became standard in graphic design, David transitioned to digital tools while maintaining his illustrative focus. His technical range includes pen and ink, markers, watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, digital painting programs, photo retouching, and 3D modeling—a breadth that reflects both adaptability and sustained engagement with image-making across evolving platforms.

His hand-drawn Lightfoot family tree, created years ago, maps the creative lineage now gathered in this exhibition.
