Caitlin Lightfoot: Lightfoot Woods

Caitlin approaches the ground as both naturalist and artist, attentive to stratification, mineral composition, and beauty in stone. After more than twenty years in the Hudson Valley, she has developed an intimate relationship with the region's geologic history and shifting terrain. Stones gathered along the Hudson River's banks become the foundation of her work.

Originally trained as a metalsmith and stone setter through an apprenticeship model, she later pursued self-directed study in lapidary techniques to cut and finish the local material she collects. This integration of hiking and gathering, geological research, lapidary practice, and metalsmithing defines her process.

She works exclusively with reclaimed metals and hand-collected stones, maintaining a practice intentionally independent of the mining industry. Travel with her family has expanded her material archive to include coastal and regionally distinct geological specimens, each carefully cataloged by location, composition, and form.

Her studio functions as both archive and laboratory. Each finished piece reflects an ongoing inquiry into material origin, environmental ethics, and the intimate relationship between adornment and deep time.

Her company, Lightfoot Woods, honors her paternal grandmother's maiden name while acknowledging the collaborative process with the earth itself.
